A Local's Guide to Southern Istria: Hidden Beaches and Quiet Coves

The most beautiful beaches in Istria aren't the ones you'll find on the first page of a guidebook. Skip the crowds at Pula and Medulin — the stretch of coast between Šišan, Ližnjan and Premantura hides some of the quietest coves in the northern Adriatic. From the gate of Hiša Oljka in Šišan, every spot below is reachable in under twenty minutes.

Marlera — wild, white-stone coves

Just south of Ližnjan, Marlera is a long, low-rise stretch of white-stone shelves dropping into shallow turquoise water. There's no resort here, no parasol rental — just pines, sea-grass and small flat rocks perfect for a towel. Come early in the morning for the calmest water; the late afternoon light turns the whole bay gold. About 10 minutes by car from Hiša Oljka.

Kale — a hidden pebble cove

Tucked between Ližnjan and Šišan, Kale is the kind of cove locals still keep quiet about. A narrow dirt path leads down through olive trees to a small pebble beach with deep, clear water — ideal for snorkelling. There are no facilities, so bring water, shade and a picnic from the Šišan bakery on the way.

Premantura & Kamenjak — Istria's wild south cape

Cape Kamenjak is the southernmost tip of Istria — a 30 km coastline of protected nature with dozens of small bays. Skip the busy entrance and drive past Premantura village to the inner gravel tracks. Safari Bar, Mala Kolombarica and Pinižule each have their own character; pick one quiet bay and stay all day. About 20 minutes from Hiša Oljka.

A few local tips for quieter beaches in Istria

  • Arrive before 9 a.m. or after 5 p.m. — even popular coves clear out in the off-hours.
  • Bring water shoes; most "hidden" beaches in southern Istria are flat stone or rough pebble.
  • The wind matters: when the bura blows from the north-east, the east coast around Marlera is sheltered and calm.
  • June and September give you the same warm sea as July and August, with a fraction of the visitors.

Stay close to all of it

Hiša Oljka sits in the heart of Šišan — a stone retreat with a private pool and olive grove, 2.4 km from the Adriatic and within twenty minutes of every cove on this page. A quiet base for a slower kind of Istrian holiday.
